The TFC athletics program hosted their first ever, all-teams sports banquet! On Thursday night, the basketball, soccer, cross-country, volleyball, and baseball teams drove to the X-Factor Grill in downtown Toccoa. The event was well attended and there was awesome food, including everything from barbecue chicken, to potatoes, to green beans, to pie for dessert. YUM!
I'd say the best part about the night was the dance off. Each table took part in a trivia game; we all tried to answer questions about different sports records. After that, to end the tie breaker, Coach Mehl suggested that there be a dance off! The tables each picked a dancer who danced to different songs. Then, one by one, they were eliminated until one winner was left. The prize involved everyone at the winning table getting a free blizzard to Dairy Queen! In the end, it was an epic showdown between Olivia (Women's Basketball) and Phil (Men's Soccer). Phil ended up taking the lead, but it was hilarious to watch everyone dance!
If you plan on joining an athletics team here at TFC, here are some exciting incentives for you:

Have you ever seen the play, "Harvey?" Our TFC drama club performed this play last weekend and according to the people I spoke with, it was a great play! The play "Harvey” is summarized by one of the cast members as the following: “Elmwod P. Dowd is a man who has an imaginary friend named Harvey. Dowd shows Harvey around to everyone, but everyone thinks Dowd is crazy. Harvey is described as six feet, three-and-one-half-inch tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit." Throughout the play, you will see that Dowd goes through a number of obstacles, losing Harvey, telling people he’s not crazy, and so on. Harvey is a play that has premiered on Broadway and is very famous.

During the vintage street fair and carnival on Friday night of Campus Preview, the TFC Drama Club presented many skits. Our TFC Jazz Band also came out and played a few songs on Earl Field. Many of our student organizations and academic departments had booths set up so that the students visiting the campus could talk with their future professors and ask any questions! Our Athletics Department even had a mini basketball shoot out competition!
Many of the LeTourneau ladies stepped up throughout the week to help set up for the carnival. It was fun to attend and from what I hear the previewers enjoyed it as well. Did you attend the vintage fair and carnival?

This week is exciting because our intermural volleyball games have really gotten competitive! What's intermural volleyball? Good question! Here at TFC, we understand that some people really want to be on athletic teams, but they just don't have the time to dedicate to a full season so we created intermural teams! Every year, we have basketball, volleyball, flag football and soccer intermural teams. Students get an email and from there they can form their own teams and send the email back to our athletic coordinator! Our athletic coordinator then translates all those emails into schedules and we reserve the gym, soccer fields or any other place for the set dates!
It's really neat because it gets people involved and you get to see other people show off their talents. I am a sub this year for a volleyball team. I think we have a chance at winning! Overall I think it's a great idea and I enjoy being able to get out there and compete when I can!

After we bowled a game, our group decided that we wanted to go to Dairy Queen! I was shocked because a lot of people also thought the same as us, so we got to see other TFC people there too. I decided to be adventuress and try the season blizzard, peppermint swirl. I must admit, it was really yummy. If I am not feeling crazy, I will just go with cookie dough. What's your favorite blizzard? Overall, it was a fun night and it was awesome that SGA could book an entire bowling alley for two hours on a Friday night.

For Campus Preview weekend (CPW), many of the clubs on campus are getting fired up! The drama club, SGA, and SMF are all participating in CPW!
The inside scoop:
Drama Club: Interested in Shakespeare? The drama club will be preforming a play during CPW!
SGA (Student Government Association): SGA plays some major roles in CPW. SGA in things like capture the flag and our very own vintage street fair!
SMF (Student Ministry Fellowship): Do you have a special talent? Save it for next year! This year, SMF has put on auditions for their very own Talent Show! A neat perk is the winner of the talent show will gain 50 points for their class points via SGA! Class points are determined by people attending events, participating in campus activities and many other opportunities.

This week, Cathy announced that they are accepting
applications to be an RA next year!
What’s an RA? Glad you
asked! RA short for Resident Advisor,
and they have several responsibilities on the hall such as looking out for the
freshman ladies, helping them feel included and welcome, performing room check, and beyond! I realized this year, that when you’re an RA
you’re almost always on duty because at any time people can ask you questions
like where something is or how to do a certain task. RA life is busy, but there are benefits. When you’re an RA, about $3,000 is knocked
off of your room and board at TFC.
That’s huge!
Me and Esther one of my RA's! |
Spiritual life is so important at TFC that they assign an
additional student to be an SLC, or a Spiritual Life Coordinator, to work
together as a team with the RA on the hall.
They’re there to be intentional about facilitation spiritual growth on
the hall and as a community of sisters in Christ. They lead Bible studies and
prayer meetings for the girls on the hall, and are there for us to talk to when
we need someone to listen or pray for us.
A lot of girls take full advantage of that and truly grow in the Lord
because they get to talk one on one with their SLC or even RA! There is an application
and interview with the RA and RD to become an SLC and being an SLC can also
count as a service and outreach project since you’re ministering to the girls
on your hall. It’s a very unique
position!
I learned a lot of “how-to’s” this year from my RA’s, Jenna
and Esther. My LeTourneau big sister,
Karhi, is also an RA! Hannah has been a
great SLC this year too.

This week, there was only one event going on campus because
of the
conference, but SMF (Student Ministry Fellowship) still met and I enjoyed attending!
Typically, SMF has been held in Williams Chapel on campus, but now
they have moved to the World Missions building because it has more
seating available.
I enjoy SMF mostly because it is a lot like chapel and you even get
chapel credit for going! On Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30pm we have
a time of worship lead by some students, a time to pray for issues
specific to all the countries around the world, and a message.
Usually, students who took part in an internship abroad will talk
about their experience, but sometimes missionaries like Mr. & Mrs.
Williams speak too! It's neat to hear their experience while in
Cambodia because it really gives me a perspective of what it's like to
serve and experience God at work. I would suggest going to SMF
regularly if you are a Cross-Cultural major or minor, missions majors,
or any other major that could possibly send you over-seas.
SMF is a great club to get involved with and get a good idea on some
mission’s agencies to partner up for a future internship!

This past Friday, SGA paid for everyone to go bowling in town at a local
bowling alley, Rose Lane, from 7-9pm! It was so fun to see how many
students braved the cold weather and came to bowl! In my group, we
waited for another group to finish a game, and then we got our game of
bowling in. Let's just say, I don't think bowling is for me, but it was
still fun to get off campus for a little bit and hang out with friends!

On Saturday night, TFC students had the option to attend the annual Christmas banquet. This year it was held in the DeFoor Center, an art gallery in Atlanta, GA! It was similar to a winter formal with dinner and fancy dresses for the ladies tuxes for the guys! I was surprised at how well the guys cleaned up, and all the ladies looked fabulous! Megan, Sarah, Cristy, Brooke and I formed our own group from LeTourneau. We left TFC around 3pm and got to the event around 6pm, since it was such a busy weekend in Atlanta. Can anybody say SEC Championship?!
Sarah, Me, Chip, Cristy, Brooke (L to R) |
Jake and Keith took out the back seat! |
At the event, we found Christmas decorations and props for picture-taking! After taking photos in our pretty dresses and making memories, we were seated for dinner. The menu for the night consisted of chicken, green beans, roasted potatoes and lots of cakes and coffee for dessert! I thought the food was great and the venue was classy! I’m really glad I went!
After the banquet, many groups went into downtown Atlanta for coffee or went out for Frozen Yogurt. Our group found an awesome cosmic bowling center just outside of midtown! I even won the first game!
Megan, Cristy, Brooke, Me |
One of the highlights was that Brooke, our driver, accidently locked her keys in her trunk when we got to the bowling alley. We thought we might have to call a lock smith, but the guys that were with us dug out a wrench and took her backseat apart! By the end of the night, we all had a great night! Have you ever had a scary experience in a busy area like that?
Sarah, one of the girls with us, lived near the bowling center so we ended up spending the night at her house and came back to TFC the next day. It was awesome being in Atlanta and seeing the city!

Enough food to feed 600 Toccoa Families! |
This past Saturday SGA bought around 500 turkeys and helped
feed the people in Toccoa. Empower, the
name of the event had a great turn out and there were lots of volunteers. I didn't get a chance to go, but Dr. Myers,
our TFC president, was there helping out.
TFC President, Dr. Myers and students! |
From the students who got a chance to go, a lot of them said
it was a fun event and they got a glimpse of what the Toccoa community is like.
Students also mentioned that it reminded them that ministry opportunities and
opportunities to be ministered to exist in the community. It's a great time
while you are in college to discover those. Did you help out with Empower?

This Friday
we had the opportunity to visit the TFC Fall Festival at camp Toccoa. Camp Toccoa is a two minute drive just off
campus and we used their facility for this awesome event. SGA put it together
and there was everything from lion dancing, to bobbing for apples, to corn hole,
to pumpkin carving contests, to face painting and more! Me and a bunch of girls from my floor, L2,
went together and had a blast!
When we
walked up the steps to an old cottage house, we saw glowing pumpkins, some
decorated saying “TFC!” After walking in, we came to the main floor of the open
house and there was lion dancing. A DJ
instructed us on how to lion dance, folk dance, wobble, electric slide, and more! I saw a ton of new faces that I don’t normally see during
the day so it was neat to see everyone come together.
During the
festival, I successfully bobbed for my first apple, participated in all the
dancing activities with my friends, watched a few girls get their face painted
and saw who won the pumpkin carving contest (Starry Night carving) and best costume contest (Genie and Aladdin)!
What are your Thanksgiving plans?

On Oct 28th,
SGA took a group of us to go to Grace Baptist and Zebulon’s fall
festivals! I went with some friends to
Zebulon where we participated in Trunk-or-Treat!
The first
part of the night consisted of mini carnival like games such as ring toss. I helped teach kids how to play the game and
win a piece of candy. They even had a
mini cupcake cake walk. After we gave
everyone a chance to arrive, we helped serve the main meal; hot dogs and chips,
YUMMY! I helped serve cheese puffs and
chex-mix to those from the church and the local community that came. I was happy to get involved because I have
recently been attending Zebulon for both young adult group and the main church
service. I saw some familiar faces and
it was cool to see my young adult group leaders there too!
Trunk-or-Treat?
I thought it was Trick-or-Treat!
If you want
to go and sit in front of your house and pass out candy, that is considered
Trick-or-Treat; however, if you want to put candy in the trunk of your car and
have kids ride a hay wagon to get there, then you are officially
Trunk-or-Treating! After helping serve
the meal, we all relocated outside and decorated some of the vehicles. Some of the vehicles even had a fog machine,
cool music, or neat lights! Have you ever gone Trunk-or-Treating?
SPY GAMES! They’re
back this year and the quote used from the Hunger Games movie speaks for
itself, “May the odds be ever in your favor!”
SGA hosts Spy Games every year and it has a history of being one of the
most intense campus wide events on campus!
Sign-ups for Spy Games will begin on the 29th of October and go through
the 31st. Spy Games officially begin Nov
2nd. I have never participated in a
campus-wide event before, so I am really looking forward to being a part of Spy
Games.
What on Earth is Spy Games?
Here’s the basics:
Students sign up and are given a “kill card” with the name and picture
of their target as well as a “TFC-issue” water gun. When the games begin, every player must hunt
down and “kill” that person by spraying them with the water gun. After confirming that they have successfully
and legally killed their target, they are to report it to the SGA officials
from whom they receive their next “kill card.”
While you are hunting your target, someone else is hunting you! If you survive until the end, prizes are
given to the overall winners! Up to $100
can be awarded if you “go forth and conquer.”

This week SGA put on a Dodge-ball tournament!
Before any of the games began SGA held a costume contest. From Elves to ropes and helmets to men in
pink, we had quite the spread. There
were a number of great teams who gave it their all, but Micah and the Boys were
too good to be beat! It was an intense
couple of first rounds with The Mountain Men, The Outdoor Club, and The Worst Team Here, etc.
Going into the final round, Micah and the Boys
went in undefeated so the other team had to beat them twice if they were to win
it all. The crowd grew silent when we
saw Micah and the Boys get defeated during the first of the two final matches,
but then jumped for joy when the team pulled a win in round two!
Our TFC president Dr. Myers, a spectator among
the crowd had a few words, "I tried to see the game with both eyes, but I
had trouble because there was too much pink!" Even the head coach for Micah and the Boys,
Brady, said the following, "How could we lose?" Both teams gave it their all in the final
round, but we can safely declare Micah and the Boys our 2012 Doge-ball
champions!
Last Friday, we had another open dorm style event except
this time it wasn’t a dorm, it was the upper class men terraces! The juniors and seniors opened up their
terraces last Friday for us to check them out and socialize with the
upperclassmen. They had a neat lighting
style outside with coffee, jazz music and desert.
From my adventure on the hill, I learned a few things:
1 1. There’s a nice amount of steps from class to the
terraces ( 97 to be complete)
T 2. The terraces are apartment style where you have
3 rooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room area.
3 3. You are living with 6 in your apartment area
(12-24 in the whole dorm) so it’s a smaller community of people which is a
really great atmosphere as you become an upper class man.
4 4.
By the time you’re a senior, you can go on a
reduced meal plan and cook most of your meals
yourself or with your roommates.
Can anyone say family dinner? Yum!

Within the
first month, I have participated in many SGA activities on the weekends and
I’ve been to one Student Missions Fellowship (SMF) chapel. Back to School Bash |
Limbo at the Back to School Bash |
We finally made it! |
Hiking to the Gorge |
Girls Group |
SMF is a
new experience for me as well. I learned
a lot about what it is like to go on a short term mission’s trip. When I attended, we met up in Williams
chapel and sang a few songs to start off. Then, we moved into a time of learning by
hearing a student talk about their summer mission’s trip to South America. The topic of the night was orphans and
widows. After a short
Q&A session, we broke off into continent or large country style
groups. I was in the Africa group. We spent about twenty minutes just praying
for the orphans and widows there that they would come to know the Lord.
