Summer is Here!

Welcome back! This week is the last week of classes at TFC so this is my last weekly blog for this school year.  Overall, I would say that my freshman experience here has been a blast!  I really enjoyed living in a new state, joining a sports team, and working in the admissions office.

Mr. TFC!

Every year, each class nominates a guy from their class that they think best represents their class.  Those four guys then have an intense competition to see who the new “Mr. TFC" is!

This year, the nominees were:

These guys tried their best at completing challenges in the gym last Thursday.  It was an awesome event that included an introduction (a guy asked a girl to court them and they got to pick out a song to play in the background).  Many of the guys picked one of their good girl friends.  Tahd, the winner, went into the introduction playing the imperial march in the background; he even dressed up as Darth Vader!  Tiffany Rowlett, his lovely escort, was dressed up as Princess Laya. Next, there was a question and answer session.  The Mr. TFC candidates were asked personality questions about their close friends and roommates.  The contestants then proceeded to compete in various physical, athletic-based activities.  Fourth was a talent competition that included a sing off.  Finally, the guys picked out their final punch line and attempted to sway the crowd one last time!

During the weekend of April 4th-6th, many prospective junior and senior high school students came to visit the campus! We were excited to see over a hundred new faces throughout the weekend. I really enjoyed getting to meet the students and was privileged to have a previewer from Florida named Lisa stay in our room!

Some of the highlights from Campus Preview Weekend included a talent show that was put on by one of our student organizations (called Student Missions Fellowship), an evening game of capture the flag, a hike with the Outdoor Club, a question and answer time with the college president and his cabinet, a bonfire and s’more night at the Toccoa Falls, and a vintage street fair and carnival. The students who visited also attended classes of their choice throughout the day on Friday, took tours of the campus, and met with their personal Admission’s Counselors. Back from Spring Break!

Welcome back! I can't believe spring break is already over, but it was
awesome!   I loved being able to go home and spend time with family
and friends.  Some of the highlights of my break were that I got to go
to Witnerjam 2013 in Cleveland, OH, I got to go home for the first
time in about four months, and I got to relax! I really enjoyed being
home again and attending my home church too!  On one of the Sunday nights, I even got to help out with the youth group and talk to my leader back home about a student ministry opportunity!

Almost Time for Spring Break!

On Saturday, a group of us took a study break and went to Currahee Mountain in Toccoa!  I have been there once earlier for a 5K race, but this time it was to see the sunset and get some cool photos. Currahee is a great place to go to in town if you want some quiet time or want to take a hike.



Currahee was great, but it was a short trip because this week is midterm week which means lots of homework.  I have a test in all my classes so every night I will be making coffee and studying away!  The only nice thing about midterms is that once this week is over, I'll get to go back home to Ohio for the week and see friends and family! The City of Toccoa!

Friday, March 8th

 Toccoa has some neat areas on and around campus! A lot of students come to North GA for hiking, camping and the great outdoors! One of our professors, Dr. Penland, said that you could hike a different local trail every weekend of the school year and never see the same place twice! Some popular hikes on campus are the path to Little Falls and Dead Man’s Trail which leads to Contentment Falls. Off campus, there’s Tallulah Gorge State Park, trails by broken bridges, Currahee Mountain and Panther’s Creek. There are also plenty of local camping areas for overnight trips and adventures.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, Toccoa has lots of great places to re-fuel we students like to frequent. There’s McDonalds, Walmart, the Java Station, BJ’s Diner , Taco Bell and much more! If there’s one area in which Toccoa surpasses expectations, it’s the fantastic variety of restaurants! Sometimes the girls in LeT go out to eat as a dorm and we get to split the cost: it’s a great night out!

Have you ever heard of Harlem Shake?  It originated in Harlem, New York in 1981.  AI B, a Harlem resident, said it comes from the ancient Egyptians and describes it as what the mummies used to do.  Due to being all wrapped up, they couldn’t really move, all they could do was shake around.


This said, do you want to see the admissions office create our own Harlem Shake video?!  Comment below or tell us your thoughts. Hope to see you soon!

Excited for the class of 2017!

Welcome back!  Did you know TFC is growing in numbers and alumni support?  Currently, the freshman class is the biggest class since the class of 2007, with a total of about 260 students!  Aside from all of that, our new president, Dr. Robert Myers (aka Dr. Bob), is working on some awesome projects both nationally and at the state level to give students the best education TFC can offer!

After a short interview with Dr. Bob, I found out a few things that I think incoming freshman should know about TFC because it’s exciting!

 First, Dr. Bob just got back from Washington D.C where he spoke with some US Senators!  He’s been working to protect our religious liberties, our financial aid opportunities and make our motto, “Where character is developed with intellect,” known throughout the state of Georgia and on national level too!

The school is also adding brand new majors coming fall of 2013!  The first one is for students who already have some college credit; maybe they didn’t have time to finish thier degree, but now they can at TFC by receiving a general studies degree!  Another really exciting major is Sports management!  I am a Cross-cultural/business major myself and I have a passion for sports due to Cross-Country so I have actually been thinking about a minor in sports management!  

Recently, TFC received a donation and there is a new building on campus called the Leon-Gaffney Center. It’s a museum and it houses the offices for the Outdoor Leadership major.  There is also a new surprise for TFC athletes coming in the fall!  And the baseball team has also launched their own donation program!

Overall, Dr. Bob is really enthusiastic about TFC’s potential, and has a great vision for the upcoming years!  He even gave me a note of encouragement to pass along to all of you:  

“TFC is a special place that allows you grow in the knowledge of Christ, while obtaining a wonderful academic education. You really need to visit campus to see for yourself this remarkable community of learners. Once you visit I bet you'll be hooked! Take a chance and you just might change your life!”  Get excited class of 2017, you’re in for a treat!

This Friday, the LeT girls dressed up in 80’s wear for our famous 80’s party! While our RA’s were decorating for the party, we went to the basketball game dressed in our outfits; big hair, big dresses, loads of makeup, and more!  After we were allowed to enter the dorm again, we left the game and walked into a “totally rad” 80’s dance party for just us girls.

We all had a great time because we could get our photos taken with records in the background, eat a ton of food, dance to good old 80’s music like “Footloose” and “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”  We even got to play freeze dance!  Have you ever played freeze tag?  Well this is very similar, except we danced to a song instead of running around.  If you moved while the music was stopped, you were out! A lot of the mid-dance positions we froze in were downright hilarious!   And a ton of us ended up winning in the end!

The 80’s dance is a LeT tradition, and our RA’s and our Resident Director, Cathy, said that this is the best event of the year by far!  I thought it was fun raiding our own closets for clothes that could pass for 80’s attire. Do you have any 80’s style clothes?

World Outreach Conferene Week with Jason Ostrander!

This week at TFC we got to be a part of the World Outreach Conference!  This was an all week event that encompassed 2 night chapels and other opportunities to explore Global Outreach. We were even given classes Tuesday off for the national Day of Prayer!  Did your classes get canceled?  Our speaker for the week was Jason Ostrander who is the National Youth Director for the Alliance Church.  His main topic for the week was about following God’s will for our life in relation to missions and being committed and intentional to the call. To kick start the week, on Monday, we had the international reception. 

The international reception was a real eye opener to me because around twenty-five different missions’ organizations came to the gym and we could talk to them about internship or full time ministry opportunities!  In a way, some students (especially those who are Cross Cultural majors) almost took it as a job fair because they will be working with organizations similar to those represented!  I am a Cross-Cultural Business major, so I enjoyed looking around to see a place where I could possibly do my internship for summer 2014!

I got to talk with a few representatives from organizations that are located in India, the place where I would like to intern.  It was nice getting to meet with people and ask them what it is like to serve on the field because their experiences are very similar to what I’d be doing, at least for my internship!  I think for a lot of the students, including myself, it gave us all an idea on what we could do for our study abroad or our internship.  Have you ever been on a short term mission’s trip or worked over-seas?

Back from Christmas Break!

Snow day, well..sort of :)

Welcome back!  It feels great to be back at TFC and spend time with my friends again! During the first week of classes, we started on a Tuesday, then we didn't have class on Friday because of a snow day, so we had a nice three day weekend to start off the New Semester!





When I left TFC, I was excited for break because there was a lot planned in just a few short weeks! Over winter break, I had a great time in Orlando, Florida with my family, grandparents, and friend.  A week before the family came down, I got to stay at my friend's house, also named Emily (talk about confusing).  Did you know that we have 5 Emily's that work in the Admissions office? Is your Admissions counselor named Emily?  Ok, back to break. During my first week with Emily, I got to see her new house, visit Cocoa Beach for a day, head up Disney's Hollywood Studios and even spend time relaxing by the pool! It was great to see her again.

Vacation time!

When my family came, I relocated to Orlando, FL where I spent a week with them and my grandparents in my family's condo.  It was very relaxing and fun because we got to visit Fun Spot, Sea World, saw Les Mis on Christmas day and just hung out. Don't worry, the party didn't stop there!

The next week I got to visit with my friend, Megan, from TFC for a few days. From her house, we went to Passion 2013, a Christian conference for college students held once a year at the Atlanta Dome! This year they had roughly 65,000 people, it was packed!  I got to hear speakers such as Francis Chan, Louie Giglio, John Piper, and Beth Moore!  They also had amazing worship sessions led by Jesus Culture, David Crowder, Matt Redmin Chris Tomlin and Lecrae!  I had a great experience connecting with the Lizella Baptist Church for a few days before heading back to TFC! I strongly recommend anyone to go to Passion 2014 next year!

Almost Time for Christmas Break!

Friday December 7th

This week we had a dorm meeting to discuss final room-checks before Christmas break!  TFC’s break starts December 12th and we’ll return for Winterim on January 6th!  Winterim is a 2-week semester typically taken by freshmen.  That means we get the campus all to ourselves with no upperclassmen to bother us!  We’ll have dorm meetings that keep us up to date on upcoming events, and we’ll even have prayer meetings together as a community.

Here’s a To-Do list to give you an idea of what needs to be done to the dorm rooms before winter break:

Vacuum
Clean sink/mirror
Make beds
Dust vent in air conditioner
Wash all personal dishes
Organize closet
Take out trash
Take home/throw away all open food boxes

On Thursday nights at 10pm, during the normal part of the semester, we only vacuum, clean sink/mirror, make beds, dust air vents, and take out our trash.  Jenna, our RA (Residential Assistant), told us from experience that it feels so much better to come back to a tidy room!  I’m stoked for break to begin!

On Thursday afternoon, the TFC Advisory Board came to campus to visit the falls and meet with the president, Dr. Myers, over lunch.  To backtrack a little, a while ago, Mr. Hansen, from the Alumni department at TFC, said that he would like my story of how I came to TFC to be published in the December Alumni letter.  After I told him all about how I ended up picking TFC (still so glad that it did), he had the story published in the December letter that goes out sometime in early December!

The really neat part is when the Advisory Board came to visit today; he asked me if I would be able to share my story over lunch. I got to sit down with all the heads of TFC and the city of Toccoa including the Mayor of Toccoa!  I had a great experience getting to meet some important business leaders in Toccoa and I even got a picture with the Mayor afterword!

Oh, I almost forget to update on my fantastic Thanksgiving break! I got to home to Ohio, about a ten hour drive, to see my family!  The drive was long, but I carpooled up with some people from TFC and it made the trip really fun.  I had a wonderful time seeing my friends from high school again and spending time with my family over the holiday weekend.  Towards the end of the trip I had snow on my car in the morning, brr!  Have you seen snow before?

Overall, I ate a ton of food, slept a lot, and had a great time! I think the best part was knowing that I would be seeing my family again in a few weeks!
